Mandy's Fund

Mandy Sayer was finally diagnosed with ALS in August 2014, two years after the first muscle weakness appeared in her left foot. She continued to enjoy her house and garden until she was taken into palliative care. She died peacefully in her sleep only a few weeks later on 19th February 2015.

This tribute fund has been set up to honour her wish to contribute to finding a cure for ALS and to supporting others with this devastating disease.

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” (Thomas Campbell)

"Grown lighter than breath, she is set free in our remembering. Grown brighter than vision, she is hidden in all that is, and cannot be lost">

Dearest Mandy - how I too wish you were still here. I have so many memories of you - a wonderfully warm, clever, indomitable woman, and constant friend of so many years, with whom laughter and tears have been shared, debates and informed exchanges of ideas, and the sharing of some of our childrens' magic moments. Thank you Mandy for all that and more. Shine on brightly you diamond xxxx

Helmuth Hausen, "Heat Transfer in Counterflow, Parallel Flow & Cross Flow". Translated from the German by Mandy S Sayer, Published by McGraw-Hill in 1983. As the Editor of this translation, I can think of no better tribute than a letter I received from the now late Professor Hausen: "Gladly I use this occasion to thank you and Mrs Sayer for the enormous work and trouble you took in translating and editing my book. Please give my compliments to Mrs Sayer. Yours sincerely, Helmuth Hausen." For my part, I shall always remember Mandy's kindness and generosity of spirit during the long period while this translation was being prepared. A friendship between Many and Joe on the one hand and my wife Joan and myself on the other was firmly consolidated. We shall never forget Mandy although the copy of the translation sits on my bookshelf will always remind me of her.
